J.C. Hampton poured in 39 points Saturday night to propel East Hall of Gainesville, Georgia, to the championship of the Alaska Airlines Classic at West High.
East Hall pulled away from Bartlett in the third quarter to claim an 87-74 victory and end Bartlett’s run through the eight-team tournament.
The Golden Bears knocked off two of the three out-of-state teams in the tournament – Mount Zion of Durham, N.C. and Christian Life of Houston — but couldn’t contain the Vikings and Hampton in the title game.
A 6-foot-2 senior guard headed to Texas A&M, Hampton hit 14 of 15 free throws and 11 of 20 field goals. He made it a double-double by collecting 10 rebounds.
Hampton’s 39 points tied the tournament record set in 1992 by East’s Trajan Langdon.
The game was tied 35-35 at the half, but the Vikings took command with a 29-16 third quarter.
Steve Maduro’s 22 points paced Bartlett, which was plagued by 34 percent shooting.
Iziah Sherman-Newsome came close to a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds, Jai Rial tossed in 13 points, Treshawn King-Dunbar added 12 and Trenton Anthony 11.
