East’s Hasaan Herrington scored a game-high 23 points and Daion Doughty pumped in 17 of his 19 points in the second half as the T-birds flew away with a 80-51 over Barrow in the tournament’s fifth-place game.
Herrington had two dunks, a 3-pointer and four rebounds and will finish among the tournament scoring leaders.
The 6-foot-2 junior netted 74 points, making him just the sixth Alaskan since 2013 to eclipse the 70-point benchmark in the Classic. He is No. 1 among East players over that time.
Jayden Voliva finished with only nine points, but played an instrumental role in the T-birds pulling away for good.
With his team holding a 33-28 lead, Voliva converted an old-fashioned three-point play and then made a steal and finished the layup to push the lead to 38-28. That seemed to wake up the T-birds.
From there, Doughty took over. He scored the final points of the third quarter on a hoop-and-harm three-point play and then went nuts in the fourth quarter, with 10 of East’s 33 points in the frame.
The Barrow Whalers never retreated against their big-city opponent – not after being down 10-0 to start the game and not after trailing 25-7 early in the second quarter.
Credit them for fighting back to make it a 31-21 at the break and then pulled as close as 33-28 on Benjamin Kim’s 3-pointer.
Brendon Matthews had 14 points, including 13 in the second half. Anthony Fruean added 11 points and Isiah Mongoyak played big with 10 points.
