West’s Lupe’Lani Vaaia scored eight of her 13 points in the first quarter and the Eagles got defensive in the second half to highlight a 46-35 win over Grace Christian on Day 1 of the Alaska Airlines Classic at West High.
The Eagles held Grace to 12 points over the final 16 minutes, including just five in the fourth quarter.
West closed the game on a 24-12 second-half run as crunch time brought out the best in Jordan Zackery, Juliette Adlawan, Matagi Maugaotega
Zackery grabbed seven rebounds and drained two 3-pointers in the third quarter, including one bomb to beat the clock to end the half and push West’s lead to 34-30 heading into the fourth quarter.
Adlawan scored 4 of her 6 points in third quarter and Matagi Maugaotega had all 4 of her points in fourth quarter.
West’s Natalie Drussell scored 11 points, going 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the last 49 seconds. She also had five steals.
Grace’s Ella Boerger and Sophie Lentfer combined for 29 of their team’s 35 points.
Boerger pumped in a game-high 16 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Lentfer scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds. Reagan Lash ripped down a game-high nine rebounds.
Both teams are in action Wednesday on Day 2 of the girls Classic at West High, with Grace Christian taking on Point Hope at 6 p.m. and South Anchorage playing West Anchorage at 7:30 p.m.
