Classic consolation: Lathrop 58, Juneau-Douglas 53

Earl ‘The Pearl’ Parker put on a show in the second half and finished with 24 points to lead Lathrop back from a 10-point deficit to beat Juneau 58-53 in the consolation round of the Alaska Airlines Classic at West High.

Parker scored 16 of team’s final 26, including 12 in a row as the put the Malemutes on his back and carried them to the program’s first-ever victory at the Classic, the state’s premier prep hoops tournament.

Lathrop previously played in the Classic in 1990 and 2011, finishing eighth both times. This year head coach Matt Wilken has the Malemutes playing for fourth place.

Parker and Co. are built different.

Lathrop’s Jayce Slifer added 10 points, Peyton George had nine points and Atticus Foley scored six, including the go-ahead 3-pointer inside the final minute of the game.

Foley created an extra possession after diving for a loose ball for the tie up, possession arrow Malemutes. Seconds later he got the ball at the top of the key and buried one of the biggest shots of his career.

Rylee Corbett iced the game with a pair of free throws with 23 seconds left, lifting Lathrop to 3-3 on the season. The team has lost out on some games this season but has now gained a ton of momentum with a colossal Classic comeback

Alyx Bohulano pumped in all 10 of his points in the first half to spark Juneau’s 32-24 halftime lead. He ended the half by stealing the ball near halfcourt and taking it all the way to the hoop for an and-1.

Sean Oliver pumped in a game-high 17 points and drained three 3-pointers. He had seven of his team’s final 10 points to end the first half.

Oliver’s 3-pointer put Juneau up 51-50 with 3:54 to play.

Early on, Bohulano did most of the heavy lifting in a 15-4 run with seven points and an assist to give Juneau a 20-10 lead.

On Saturday, Lathrop will play Dimond in the fourth-place game at 4:30 p.m. and Juneau will face Colony in the seventh-place at 3 p.m. Both games are at West High.
